UpCycle Northwest works
with large Pacific Northwest coffee roasters to reclaim and reuse good materials that might otherwise be sent to the landfill.
The following
organic products are available immediately for pickup/purchase from our recycling facility in Seattle, located in SoDo (near Safeco Field).
Puget Sound-area delivery is available by quote; see our contact information at the bottom of this page. We do occasionally ship products to customers outside the Seattle area, but only via truck freight in full-pallet quantities: 250 bags (about 400 pounds) is a minimum order. Please contact a freight carrier to get approximate quotes for truck shipping to your destination before you contact us. |

Reclaimed
natural burlap coffee bags Burlap (jute) is a fantastic natural weedblock and erosion control material. Our reclaimed, recycled bags are clean, attractive, and easy to work with. Unlike plastic or cardboard materials, natural burlap fabric holds mulch well (on top or underneath), allows water and oxygen to naturally percolate into the soil, and is considerably nicer to look at! It breaks down naturally over a long period of time - probably 3-5 years depending on local conditions and the type/thickness of any covering mulch - and enriches the soil while leaving no residue. (Do a Google search for "Interbay Sheet Mulch" to get numerous articles on the sheet-mulching technique pioneered at the Interbay P-patch that builds insanely fertile soil using organic mulch with burlap bag covering.) Unopened, each 29"x40" bag covers about 7.5 sq feet, so each dozen nets about 90 sq ft and each 12 dozen (144 bags) about 1000 sq ft in a single layer.
Garden/landscape-grade bags are always available for easy warehouse pickup, by appointment. Cost is just 99 cents per
bag for 1-25 bags, with significant discounts for larger orders or imperfect bags.
Please contact us if you need full-pallet or greater quantities (250 bags or more) for industrial use, major restoration projects, or
weed/erosion control over large areas. Low-cost jobsite delivery is always available within the Puget Sound area.
Full truck-shippable pallets of bags can be created for all orders of this size or larger.
We can also
quote prices on "no-cut" bags if your needs involve creating fabric container planters (for potatoes, tomatoes, or mushrooms) or for
bulk material storage (crop harvest, foundry parts, marine use, etc). We also can show you our stash of special "arty" or "country-specific" bags for decorative, fashion, and craft projects.

Coffee roaster chaff A great organic mulch, worm bedding, chicken coop "duff", and primo compost or soil amendment. Easy to work with - light, moves easily, then packs down quickly with just a spritz of water on top. It's nice to look at, and doesn't attract squirrels or other critters. See Ann Lovejoy's articles on the virtues of chaff in Northwest gardens. Woodland Park Zoo adds as much of this stuff as they can get to their ZooDoo mix - it soaks up the excess moisture and according to their Master Composter, has "a C-N ratio near perfection". Since the coffee roasting process heats the beans to over 500 degrees F, chaff is guaranteed to be sterile and to not to have any chemical residues whatsoever. Chaff is always FREE for pickup, with first priority for notification and pickup going to those who purchase other items from us. Already packaged in easily-transported bags. (For current chaff pickup status and schedule, vist our Chaff Availability page.) |

Fresh green and roasted coffee beans for gardens
Beautiful, natural "pebbles" that make
gorgeous garden pathways, borders, and mulches that actually improve the surrounding soil as the naturally (and very slowly) bio-degrade
over time. (Again, a good reference source for this is
Ann Lovejoy's articles on the coffee bean pathways in her own garden.)

Fresh roasted ground coffee (unbrewed/non-food-grade) Another great soil amendment, worm food, and mulch. Ground coffee is a highly bio-available, nitrogen-rich additive that promotes plant growth, especially for tomatoes, and it's said also to reduce certain the incidence and severity of some fungal and viral plant blights. In the soil or as a border dressing, it can control unwanted pests (it's a great natural slug repellent). Unbrewed and fresh from the roaster, so it's pure, clean, and has all its nutrients still intact. Note: for garden use only; not suitable for food use. Sold in bulk or bags; prices for pickup are 75 cents/pound for 10-99 pounds, 60 cents/pound for 100+ pounds. We have several thousand pounds in stock now. Summer Sale! Just 40 cents per pound, no minimum purchase. Discounts for 100+ pound purchases! |
